I’m jumping on the blogging bandwagon. I have been thinking about it for sometime now. I am inspired to do it because of the wonderful people I have come in contact with in recent years through my Brittle Bark venture (although, I like to think of it more as a journey; or better yet an adventure!). It is my way of reaching out and connecting with these folks.
It occurred to me as I prepared my latest concoctions of wine brittles that debuted today at the Art and Wine Walk in downtown Mechanicsburg that I, myself, am an artist. I express myself through brittle – and all that goes along with it. Of course my Brittle Bark has to look good, taste fabulous and present well; but there is something more than that. It is much more personal. Each brittle variety has a story or memory associated with it.
I thought it might be fun to share these with you. So many people over the years have asked me how I come up with the different varieties. It will take some time though; after all, there are over 20 varieties! This blog will be my “brittle musings,” and a snap shot of Brittle Bark. It is kind of a “peek behind the curtain.” I will also share recipes for using brittle in recipes, give ideas on decorative packaging and gift giving, and definitely introduce you to some of the fine people who I have had the pleasure to cross paths with during my Brittle Bark adventure.
You can feel free to weigh in too! Last week’s Ladies Night Out here at Brittle Bark left me feeling like I wanted this “girlfriend” hangout atmosphere to somehow continue. While I will certainly have more events like that, this too will be a way that we can get together, chat and get to know each other. Enjoy. I hope you’ll check back and share this with a friend and pop into Brittle Bark too!
Diane.

Hi, Diane: What a great idea! I love Brittle and MISS YOU! Life gets ahead of us sometimes, doesn’t it?! Anyway, congratulations on your blog–I look forward to hearing brittle stories!
And I also love the “Girl’s Night Out” idea–I have someone women I’d love to invite to one sometime, if you do it again!
Well, I am so proud of you and your success since I knew you when this all started. You are a wonderful friend and of course the Brittle Bark is delicious and the pies are a big hit with my family and also make really nice gifts. You know I love the Red Raspberry Brittle and thanks for making it. I will soon be retired again beginning July 1st as our project is being sent to Argentina….Now I will be able to make you special events…Hope to see you soon….Love to David and Kate. Was good seeing you and am anxious to get some of your new Brittle….Can you come up with one with peaches in it….Keep smiling…
So great to hear from you Lawrie - we did have a fabulous Ladies Night Out and this has become an annual event so never fear - you will get another chance to come and bring some friends! Here’s a little advanced “scoop” - I will be at the GIANT Cooking School in September (limited seating!) to show how you can use Brittle Bark to make a unique meal. Lots and lots of new directions unfolding that are so much fun. I’ll keep you and others up to date as details are finalized.
Peaches in a new variety of Brittle Bark…. well I will have to give that some thought! We have been working on a few different varieties, and you know that many new ones come from friends like you! August is the month for peaches so let me see what we can experiement with in the kitchen. Since you like the Raspberry Dream, here is something to try with any crumbs left over - sprinkle on raspberry sorbet or vanilla bean ice cream. It is heavenly!
You shop is beautiful! I am so impressed with your success. It is always exciting when you can do what you love!
Thank you so much for your kind encouraging words! We have so many plans for the future and hope that you will be able to see how we grow over the next several years while remaining a small, creative downtown business. It isn’t often that you get to do what you love every day!
